“The Indoor Generation”: What Are Your Thoughts?

This morning I came across a video a fellow member posted in one of the groups I belong on Facebook [Global Sisterhood]. It was from The Velux Group and entitled “The Indoor Generation”.

Since first seeing it, I’ve discovered that it is beginning to go viral. Maybe since Huffington Post has weighed in on the subject as well.

Don’t worry! I’ll share it at the bottom of this so you can view it as well if you haven’t already.

To be honest, as I was viewing it, I was not surprised. It’s something that Dh and I have been noticing as of late as well.

I love our new home! (Myrtle Beach, not the building itself.) Sure! Our neighbors closely surround us, but we have created (and are continuing to create) a sanctuary for ourselves. And that includes our back patio.

We spend a great deal of time outdoors. As much as we possibly can.

Morning coffee is often taken outdoors as is dinner. On the sunny days, as well as rainy ones. Last night, we put the patio umbrella up and enjoyed the gentle rain we had here. And when the weather is really good, we have been spending one of our weekend days at the beach.

As a kid, my parents taught me to appreciate nature and enjoy the outdoors, even in the rain.

I remember my mom telling me, “you’re not so sweet you’re going to melt”. It’s something that I often say to this day.

Dh has always been an outside kind of guy, as well. It’s therapeutic for both of us. So, it has amazed us how little we actually see our neighbors outdoors!

Some of them have great setups on their back patios and yards, but we hardly ever see them outdoors enjoying them! Even the kids… We know they live around us, but hardly ever see them. We’ve become more acquainted with their dogs, than we have them, even giving them nicknames as some people give their neighbors. (Doodly Doo, Oldie, Blackie, Buddy, PITA 1 & 2. lol)

Don’t get me wrong. In a selfish sort of way, it’s kind of nice. I like the quiet, but it really boggles my mind too.

People come here for vacation, but we’re absolutely blessed! We get to live here 365 days a year! Makes me wonder, how many of those people are dreaming of their next vacation?

So, where do you fall on the spectrum? Are you an outdoor sort of person? Or part of the “Indoor Generation”? What are your thoughts on the video from Velux or the article from Huffington Post? I would love it if you’d share your thoughts and perceptions on the subject in the comments below!

May Love and Light Shine Upon You,

  1. What a great video, and how sad really. It ties in wonderfully with what I, just this morning, rambled about humans and their lost connection to nature. I live in a bit city but am fortunate enough to have a very beautiful terrace that I have turned into a green sanctuary. It does not totally compensate for the sea that I miss, but it surely helps offset a lot of the disadvantages of living in mostly artificial surroundings. Makes me want to go out and take a deep breath!

    1. It really is sad how isolated from nature and each other we’ve become over time. We don’t have a huge natural area as we once did, but I do think I feel more connected to nature with our small space than I did with the huge one, which made me feel as though I was in a constant battle with it. It does make you feel that way – wanting to go outside and take a deep breath – doesn’t it?! lol
